I remember her.
It was called “PIttsboro Taxi” — not very imaginative. The lady that ran it, it was a one-person operation, was from New Jersey. Both my parents were as well — so when my mother rang her up once, they had quite a chat for hours!
Alas, this was after she’d moved back home, having had no business for six months at least, by her own accounting. I think she was used to big-city business — I’d never seen advertising for her, we found a single line in the (paper copy!) phone book and that was it. Probably that had something to do with it. You have to advertise out here.
Chatham Transit, meanwhile, *is* a 501(c)3 nonprofit, unless they’ve restructured in the past few years, although they receive government funding as well, at least by contract for Medicaid services. I believe they are partially funded by county and state resources, both, in a more formal sense, however, as they have to adhere to at least some state laws regarding government agencies, such as how vehicles have to be disposed of at state auction once they rack up a certain number of miles on the odometer.
Uber and Lyft have no presence here. I tried once. They don’t exist here and the apps will lie to you about it — and then refund you 90min later. Customer support, when you can even get hold of them, won’t care and won’t help.
