One Stop Early Register and Vote

One Stop Early Register and Vote

Hello Neighbors,

Two recent ChatList posts contained incorrect information regarding the number of proof-of-residency documents required to *register to vote on the same day you cast your vote*.

If you have *lived in NC for at least 30 days*, you may register and vote the same day from October 15 to October 31 at any Early Voting Site in the county in which you live. You may NOT register and vote on Election Day, November 3, 2020, because the NC State Board of Elections (NCSBE) needs two days to verify your eligibility to vote and count your ballot.

At the voting site, tell the election official that you need to register to vote. You will complete and sign a paper form, the NC Voter Registration Application, using your valid NC Driver’s License number (if you have one) and/or the last four digits of your Social Security number. Here is the registration form:

I called the NC State Board of Elections (919-814-0700) to verify the following information on same-day registrants posted on the NCSBE website at: https://www.ncsbe.gov/voting/vote-early-person#same-day

“Same-day registrants must attest to their eligibility and provide proof of where they live. A voter attests to their eligibility by completing and signing a North Carolina Voter Registration Application. The voter must prove their residence by showing *any of the following documents* with their current name and address:

North Carolina driver’s license

Other photo identification issued by a government agency. Any government-issued photo ID is acceptable, provided that the card includes the voter’s current name and address.

A copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document showing the voter’s name and address.

A current college/university photo identification card paired with proof of campus habitation.”

You need only show *ONE* of the above documents to register to vote. Whichever document you choose *must list your current name and address.* If you do not have a valid NC Driver’s License, or you moved to NC and your driver’s license is from another state, you may use one of the other types of documents to prove your residency.

The NC Board of Elections website contains all the information you need to vote, including how to track your mail-in ballot:  https://www.ncsbe.gov/

The Chatham County Board of Elections (CCBOE) website contains a list of Early Voting sites and times: https://www.chathamnc.org/home/showdocument?id=51469  You may call them at 919-545-8500.

Finally, registered voters are NOT required to show a photo ID to vote in the 2020 election.

Thank you to the CCBOE and poll site volunteers in Chatham County who are working hard to ensure that every eligible voter is able to vote, that our polling places are free from intimidation, and that each vote is counted correctly.

Kind regards,
