I love all wild life around me. Even snakes as long as they keep to themselves and leave my other wildlife creatures alone. I even love the butterflies when they are in that special secret place during rain..

I have very few squirrels or rabbits. A few raccoons and a few possums. Only one skunk seen in the forty two years. Although it is nothing uncommon to see a couple of dead ones on hyway 64, every time I drive. Deer are around but I seldom have problems with them. But if and when they do do their thing, it is heartbreaking. They can ruin a 10 year old plant in a matter of  seconds.

I do see more lizards than anything else. Especially chameleons. The lizards that can change colors- One moment you see a green lizard on a green leaf next thing he is on a twig and changed to brown. What magical powers that is! And they have that big red ‘goozle’ that appears on their throat when mating or warning an enemy. Sometimes it is three times the size of its head. And they can look at you with puzzling eyes- suspicious of me and every thing else around them.

It really hurts me to see my cat with a lizard or butterfly. I know it is the nature of animals, but if i can do anything about it I will. Usually if a cat has a butterfly it is too late. The damage has been done and the thing can’t fly.

The other day I heard a racket on my porch. Turns out it is my cat with a Chameleon. Poor thing looked dead, broken tail and the red “goozle” was extended. I took it away from the cat. It seemed dead. No eye movement and body so dry.  I quickly doused it in water, hoping to revive it. Didn’t seem to work. I wouldn’t give up. I placed it in a grassy area, away from the cat. A place that it would be safe and could hide if revived.

First thirty mins, no movement. I looked an hour later and the red ‘goozle’ had disappeared. Another hour, the eyes open and seeing me. The third hour, it was gone. I felt really good about what I had done.

Whether you know it, like it, or even care, all those little things make the world go round . . . when they are all gone, we are on our way out too . . . .
