18 wheelers and traffic circles don’t play well together

Subject: Round ‘abouts…

Each time I approach a round-about, either in Pittsboro, Chapel Hill, Durham, Sanford, it amazes me how inefficient the engineers for the State of NC are.

I was behind a timber logging truck pulling two trailers in Sanford and the truck could not make the circle, and nearly turned over because the driver had to go up onto the medium to get around the circle.  Anyone looking at all the tire tracks at these round abouts will see that a lot of cars/trucks have left tire tracks on the medium.  Trucks entering the round abouts cannot maneuver the circle without pulling onto the medium.  Is there something I am missing, or have the engineers missed the mark in their design.  It appears that it would have become obvious by now there are problems with their design.  I have never been behind an 18 wheeler that could make the circle without pulling onto the medium, and basically causing a hazardous situation.
