I’m not sure what prompted Kathy Hotelling’s post about year-round school, but I’d like to put my two cents in. Although I’m retired now, I taught in a year-round setting in California for years. With four tracks district-wide at the elementaries and middle schools, the calendar basically worked out to three months on and one month off so at any one time 1/4 of the students and teachers were on break. The students retained the educational material much better, the utilization of school facilities was more efficient, and community services such as daycare adapted to meet the challenge. There are some excellent examples of school districts across the country that are making year-round school calendars work!
