What a joy to read the many informed and reasonable responses to Mr. Revere, Mr. Bock and Mr. West on climate change.

Dr. Dyers, in referring to himself as a Goldwater Republican was interesting since at one time I too shared that podium. 1964 was the first year I voted and, being in the US Navy, I had to send in an absentee ballot from my home state, Arizona. Senator Goldwater, before he was a senator came to my high school to give a talk in the auditorium at the Williams High School. He enlightened us with a chalk board as to how Arizona gained it’s interesting shape. Apparently, surveyors started in the lower lefthand corner of the Arizona Territory intending to create a simple box. They worked north to the upper left hand corner then east to the upper right hand corner and finally down to the lower right hand corner. It was just a matter of going straight west from there but if you’ve ever been to Southern Arizona you know the harmless dry heat can do you in. About a third of the way across their thirst got the better of them and they went to the nearest town for a beer. One beer led to another and by the time they returned to their equipment those naturally sharp surveyors’ eyes were a bit bleary. If you look at the shape of the state you can fill in the rest of the story.
