Maryphyllis, I love old growth forest too. And actually big old trees that are in a area where they can keep growing sequester more carbon than smaller trees growing rapidly AND they produce more oxygen.

I have retained a significant area of old growth along Meadow Creek and the great trees there and scattered about the farm perform the functions you describe.

As I said earlier, clear cutting MAY be appropriate depending on the landowner’s goals and the state of the forest. Replanting is USUALLY a good idea, but if not done, the native hardwoods will replace themselves, rather quickly.
