Subject: Review of Pittsboro Youth Theater Play Last Sunday

Before Pittsboro Youth Theater’s two shows last Sunday 160 or so folks from Pittsboro milled around the Kiwanis Club. Mom’s chatted pleasantly and dad’s had all the enthusiasm you’d expect them to have at a pancake breakfast without pancakes: doing thier duty but missing football.

First up the younger children in PYT’s Jr. Ensemble performed four Aesop’s Fables, including The Tortoise and The Hare. They did a good job. It was a good, small-town, community theater performance by second through fifth graders. The kids were adorable, costumes were cute, the older kids in the group shined, and many showed great potential.

Intermission was good. There was popcorn, candy, sodas, a raffle and such.

Then PYT’s older Ensemble’s performance of Wiley and The Hairy Man errupted on stage. About 5 minutes into the 70 minute play mom’s were smiling ear to ear, dads faces were starting to thaw, and kids started laughing. The great script, awesome set, and energy and skill provided by the cast brought the audience into the production, and everybody in the room had a wonderful time together.

If you weren’t there, you missed A GREAT SHOW… a shining moment… an astounding team performance…. IN PITTBORO!!! Who’d a thunk it?

There were times you couldn’t have heard a ton of pins drop because of all the laughter in the room. Half way through the show everybody was sitting on the edge of their seats.

The only bad part of the play was the ending: nobody wanted it. Tears flowed from one little girl’s eyes as she said, “I don’t want to go home.” Pittsboro Youth Theater’s Ensemble’s performance of Wiley and The Hairy Man was magic… one of those brilliant shared experiences when people feel most alive. After the show there were high fives, hand shakes and hugs all around, and Dad’s left looking like their kid’s team just won the championship.

Pittsboro Youth Theater Jr. Ensemble and Ensemble will start rehearsals for Charlotte’s Web in February and put on multiple live performances in May or June. Visit PYTensemble.squarespace.com for more information and like Pittsboro Youth Theater on Facebook.
