Clean Jordan Lake Annual Fall Cleanup for NC Big Sweep Coming Oct. 11

On Saturday, Oct. 11, Clean Jordan Lake volunteers will once again do their share in Chatham County NC Big Sweep effort from 9 am to 1 pm. They will remove trash from a two-mile stretch of shoreline that extends north from the entrance of Stinking Creek into the Haw River arm of the lake.

Fran DiGiano, president of Clean Jordan Lake, said Heavy rain and high lake levels back in March forced us to delay our spring cleanup with the Haw River Assembly to April, but that event had to be cancelled too due to another rainy weekend. So we hope this will not happen again.

Clean Jordan Lake will provide water, snacks, bags, gloves and group leaders. Due to potential hazards associated with bagging and moving trash, children under the age of 11 may not participate and those between 11 and 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

DiGiano said, Our Trash Treasure Hunt has been very popular. Photos of these unique items will be posted at registration and those lucky enough to find them will receive merchandise as prizes. It’s also a way for us to encourage volunteers to keep a close eye on the ground so we don’t miss any trash.

Volunteers should meet at 9 am at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area Robeson Creek Boat Ramps off Hanks Chapel Rd. The event ends at 1pm with a celebration lunch.

Boaters, kayakers and walkers are all welcome.

DiGiano noted that the lake shoreline has become a lot cleaner since 2009, thanks to work of 3,200 volunteers. They have come throughout each year from the public at large and various organizations wanting a community service project. Over 9,000 bags of trash (about 90 tons) and 3,400 tires have been removed from 15 miles of shoreline.
