Dear Whatzup,

I agree that Del Turner’s speech was quite different from her verbal interactions on the school board. Del always writes her speeches for public gatherings, and reads those verbatim. When in small group interactions, her way of speaking is quite different, more extemporaneous….bringing in her innate wisdom and fervent convictions.

That is NATURAL for most of us! The written word nearly always sounds different when spoken. In public gatherings each speaker is usually limited to a specific number of minutes. That’s why many people write their speeches – and probably rehearse them – in order to say all they want to say within the time allotted. The speaker necessarily has to leave out some emotional and elaborating information. Conversely, in small group gatherings such as a school board meeting, there is no time limit, therefore the person can say all they want to say and can elaborate accordingly.

Do not judge Del Turner according to her public speech recently. Attend school board meetings and notice how she expresses herself differently. Furthermore, evaluate her service on the school board according to what she repeatedly has evidenced what she stands for. She is wise, sincere, and truly motivated to help improve our school system. Lord knows it needs as much as it can get, what with the state legislature interfering, and our county board of commissioners sometimes interfering while occasionally helping as well.

We need Del Turner to remain on the School Board. She has our children’s well-being at heart regardless of their parents’ political viewpoints and regardless of racial, gender, national differences.
