“Read, Then Write Poetry” with Judy Hogan. Mondays, Sept 8-Nov 10, 2014. 7-9 PM. Ten Weeks. Bio-Fuels Kitchen, Pittsboro.
Poets at every stage of their writing career are welcome. We will read selected poems by ancient and modern poets from many cultures, which provide good models for writing the best contemporary verse. Writing assignments follow reading assignments.
We will discuss the poems’ meanings as well as techniques used, and writers may read to the class as well as turn in work to Hogan. Poets studied will be: Homer, Sappho, Catullus, Anna Akhmatova, Pablo Neruda, C.P. Cavafy, George Seferis, Ezra Pound.
Hogan is the author of five books of poetry, the most recent being Beaver Soul (2013). This River will be out Dec 1, 2014. She has taught creative writing for forty years.
To sign up: contact Judy Hogan, PO Box 253, Moncure, NC 27559-0253. 919-545-9932. judyhogan at mindspring.com

From former poetry student Diane Gallagher:
Judy Hogan is a superior writing teacher. I have taken many poetry classes with her and one short story class. She shows much expertise in the craft of writing. She brings her craft and many rich life experiences to the writing table. Judy is very diligent and methodical in reading her students’ work and it is evident when she returns your work with a plethora of comments, suggestions, and revisions. Do not expect false praise. You will receive a few with “Nice!” and you know you have authentically hit the jack pot!
