Subject: Deer Update
Many Many Thanks to everyone who responded with suggestions and thoughts about helping Mama Deer and her babies. Special thanks to Dr. Leslie Weiser at Pittsboro Animal Hospital, Suzanne Kozel, Mrs. Claws, Leigh Ann Garrard, and the folks at Carolina Tiger Rescue.
I was at the pool yesterday but did not see the deer and no one else there had seen her either. She was seen Tuesday and Wednesday. Hopefully this means she managed to get the thing off her face/mouth and is now doing great. However, if she is seen again, we/I will try to photograph her and get a better look to see what the thing is and if it is keeping her from being able to eat/drink.
The best suggestion was to dart her to put her to sleep so the thing could be removed. However, there were concerns that she might injure herself after being darted during the minute or so it takes for the sedation to work. The Wildlife Society (http://www.wildlife.org/) has been contacted and will advise us on what can be done if the deer is still in distress.
If she is seen again, I will keep you posted.
