Maryphillis and Laura, Your posts about renewable energy, both solar and wind, reminded me to encourage you and all Chatlisters to urge Duke Energy to adopt a new paradigm and change the company business model. The new model will be equally or more profitable as it provides a needed service to the next generation (pun intended) of users of electricity with much less company expense for building and operating generating facilities. Be sure, if you agree with the idea, to petition the Utilities Commission so they will begin to change their paradigm too. They will probably need to create a new formula for paying Duke Energy for maintaining the grid as ‘battery’. My letter follows, edited a bit from what I originally sent 28 May 2014. If you have a better address for Lynn Good, please let me know and all of us who think this is a good idea can use it. Also would like an email address. And you social media whizzes, do your thing!  John Dykers

Customers Build Clean Generating Plant for Duke Energy

Encouraging home/office solar/wind helps reduce Duke Energy’s expenses for more generating capacity. They can do better financially serving as the ‘battery backup’ and utilize the distribution grid. AND when we have a storm that damages the grid we won’t be in such severe stress. This will require a change in mindset as Duke Energy is so accustomed to being ‘generator’ selling juice. Customers will gladly pay the utility for serving the needs of the next generation of consumers.  Duke Energy should encourage solar paid for by customers and fill a positive role. (pun intended)

This coincidentally creates a long term solution to the coal ash problem.
