The Last Unicorn, a feature in Chapel Hill for 25 years, has announced The Last Tango in Unicornland.

The 5 acre architectural trove located in North Chatham, is going up for a 60 day sale (50% Off) commencing on May 1st.

Gaines Steer 72, the Unicorn’s business partner and muse, is “moving on to greyer pastures…” as pronounced in the enterprises final promotional barrage.  “I’d like to have a free Saturday and Sunday for once in 25 years.”

The Last Unicorn was birthed in New Market, Southern Maryland in 1974-5. Originally The Last Unicorn was a country antique store, also featuring vintage clothing and arts and crafts on consignment. Gaines re-invented TLU in North Carolina in 1991 both as a means to make a living and to showcase his growing interest in collecting and promoting unique architectural antiques. The original mainstays of the business, the antique wrought iron gate and wrought iron fence, are the core elements.

The Last Unicorn is widely known as an iconic destination for Triangle visitors from all over the East Coast.  The motto of the architectural antique experience: “WE SELL IDEAS” has  been artfully presented to the pleasure and amusement of our citizenry.  Gaines’ weekend refrain will be missed: “This is the only antiques store in the world that requires a map to the premises…”

In addition to an extravaganza of unusual items on display in themed outdoor scenes, visitors and patrons have been treated to the whimsical personality of one of the area’s genuine characters. Gaines Steer and his ubiquitous unicorn colleague will be missed.  But then, we may hear from this troupe again!

Bon Voyage!
