Celebrate Earth Day on April 12 with Chatham County
Solid Waste & Recycling Division offers free document shredding and door prizes

PITTSBORO, NC – The Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling Division will be hosting an Earth Day event on Saturday, April 12, at the Main Facility, located at 720 Renaissance Drive (six miles west of Pittsboro, off Hwy 64).

The annual Earth Day event is open to all Chatham County residents, no decal required. This year’s event features free document shredding, compost bin sales, household hazardous waste collection, mulch sales, prizes and giveaways.

The free paper document shredding will be available from 9 am to 1 pm. Chatham residents can bring up to three boxes or bags of paper per vehicle. In support of recycling and identity theft prevention, the service provides a post-tax season opportunity to safely destroy and recycle old tax records, credit card statements, and other personal documents.

As long as supplies last, Earth Machine backyard compost bins will be available from 9 am to 1 pm for $45, along with a companion kitchen collector for $5. Cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover are accepted.

Chatham County’s Saturday mulch sale continues from 7:30 am to noon for $5 per scoop, which is approximately one cubic yard. County staff will load the mulch and ask that customers bring a tarp to secure their loads. Cash or checks are accepted.

The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility also will be open from 9 am to 3 pm to accept items like cleaners and solvents, paint, and electronics of any size from Chatham residents. The HHW collection (usually held on the third Saturday of the month) has been moved to April 12 to coincide with the County’s Earth Day event.

Please note that there will be no HHW collection or mulch sale on Easter weekend, which is the following Saturday (April 19). The next HHW collection will be on May 17 and thereafter will continue on the third Saturday of the month through November.

During the event, County staff will be providing Earth Day giveaways and will be available to answer questions about recycling programs. In addition, residents can fill out an entry to win five door prizes.
