Since a lot of Chatham Park’s supporters are using “Jim Goodnight is a great guy and will do a great job” as an argument for that development, they  might be interested in this from Mr. Goodnight:

Interviewer: “Tell me about Chatham Park”

Goodnight: “Well, really, that is a development that’s run by Preston Development. which is run by Tim Smith and Bubba Rawls.  Quite frankly, I’m basically a banker for them and I am not involved at all in their daily plans.”

Interviewer: “You know there’s a lot of concern in Chatham County about that plan, how do you feel about that given what you know about the plan, what’s your sense of the impact it will have and the debate that it will stir and already has?”

Goodnight: “Well, again, you want to talk to Tim and Bubba about that, because  they’re the experts, but clearly any time any residential area is being developed there are neighbors that object to it.  We’ve had to object to some things that have gone on in Cary because because it was not good, we didn’t think for SAS…”

So in summary: Goodnight is not the developer, he’s just the banker, and he’s all for NIMBYism when it’s his interests being affected by development.

I’m not for or against Chatham Park.  But it’s incredibly foolish to rely on “Jim Goodnight is a great guy” as an argument for this development.  It should be judged strictly on its own merits.
