Subject: Release of Video About Trash at Jordan Lake
Clean Jordan Lake is a grassroots, nonprofit founded in 2009 for the purpose of removing trash from the shoreline and preventing its recurrence. We are an official partner with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the managing organization for the lake. So far, 3,000 volunteers have removed 8,500 bags of trash (that’s about 85 tons!) and 3,400 tires (many still on rims) from 15 miles of shoreline in 90 cleanup events, large and small. .
Each rainfall flushes more trash from the 1,700 square miles of watershed reaching up to Greensboro and to Hillsborough. Our work will be unless unless we can prevent trash at its source. Citizens in the 8 counties in Jordan Lake’s watershed need to be educated about their impact on the lake. Anti-litter and illegal dumping laws need to be better enforced by counties.
Recreational users of the shoreline also need to be educated about the danger to wildlife caused by plastics, broken glass and fishing line and tackle left behind .
Thanks to a grant from the Walmart Foundation, Clean Jordan Lake has just released a 5-minute video to explain how upstream counties can help solve the trash problem. The video was produced by By The Brook Productions of Pittsboro. It features interviews with Brian Bock, Vice-Chair of the Chatham County Board of Commissioners, and Carol Banaitis, Operations Project Manager, Piedmont Operations Project of USACE that includes Jordan Lake.
The video will soon be distributed to county officials and staff and public interest groups as well as appearing on our YouTube channel.
