Subject: Clean Jordan Lake’s March 15th Cleanup Rescheduled
Clean Jordan Lake’s participation in the Haw River Assembly’s annual Clean-Up-A-Thon scheduled for March 15th has been postponed until March 29th. Fran DiGiano, president of Clean Jordan Lake, said “Our volunteers are not able to access the shoreline for this weekend’s planned trash cleanup. Heavy rainfall of late last week has caused the lake level to rise by 8 feet forcing closure of boat ramps at the Jordan Lake State Recreation Area and cutting off access to shoreline paths that volunteers must follow to reach trash.”
The event is rescheduled for Saturday, March 29th with all details remaining the same. Boating, kayaking and walking volunteers will meet at the Robeson Creek Boat Ramps of the Jordan Lake State Recreation Area to receive their assignments. Boaters will ferry some of the walking volunteers to a shoreline section just north of Stinking Creek. Other walkers will drive a short distance to a logging road to access the Stinking Creek shoreline.
DiGiano noted, “The rainfall was not exceptionally large, just 2.5 inches. But it was enough to produce a sudden and huge rise in lake level. Our volunteers can expect to find an enormous new trash load on the shoreline, flushed away from the upstream watershed by rivers and streams that feed into the lake.”
Volunteers meet at 9 am for sign-in and pick up of bags, gloves and snacks. The event ends at 1 pm.
Due to potential hazards, children under the age of 11 may not participate and those between 11 and 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Volunteers are encouraged to register online for this event by visiting www.meetup.com/
