Chatham Board Encourages Applicants for Vacant Commissioner Seat
PITTSBORO-The Chatham County Board of Commissioners met briefly on Feb. 3 to discuss the process for filling the vacancy in Commissioner District 1. They agreed to encourage residents of the district to express interest in filling the vacancy by noon on Friday, Feb. 14, 2014.
The District 1 seat had been held by Sally Kost, who resigned on Jan. 21 to move out of state. She is a Democrat so the appointee to fill the seat until the end of November must also be a Democrat and must live in District 1.
“We recognize that the Chatham County Democratic Party will be bringing us recommendations of people to fill that seat,” said Commissioner Chairman Walter Petty. “However, we are committed to an open process and want to do what we can to make sure anyone who qualifies and is interested knows about this opportunity to serve.”
Petty added, “The Board of Elections has explained that anyone appointed to fill this vacancy can only serve until the end of November unless they file for office and win the election for the remaining two years of the term,” Petty said.
The Chatham County Board of Commissioners is encouraging interested people to apply for the vacancy using an online interest form as an option. Copies of submissions received online will be forwarded to the Chatham County Democratic Party by the next business day.
County commissioners also will invite applicants to the next Work Session on Feb. 17, 2014, likely between 2 and 5 pm. “This will allow us to get to know them a bit and for them to ask questions of us,” Petty said.
