Chatham Departments Sponsor Food Drive at Siler City & Pittsboro Sites

PITTSBORO-Chatham County government’s department leaders encourage residents to donate non-perishable food items and drop them off at several locations in Siler City and Pittsboro on Sept. 30-Oct. 3, 2013.

“This campaign for food is part of our annual planning meeting for all department and office leaders,” said County Manager Charlie Horne. “This is a way we can also give back to the community by delivering donated food items to two countywide food pantries at a time of year that food donations are running low.”

On Oct. 4, county department heads will sort the food, loading it onto trucks and several will be involved in delivery. “They also will be campaigning for county employees to donate food items, so this is a team effort for a great cause,” Horne said.

Food collected will be delivered to CORA Food Pantry in Pittsboro and West Chatham Food Pantry in Siler City. Both of these pantries provide food throughout the county.

Dan Stroupe, executive director of Chatham Transit, is coordinating the departmental food drive. “We included Oct. 2 as a date for dropping off food items, but folks should be aware that traffic in Pittsboro between 11 am and 2 pm could be very congested due to a large bicycling tour in the county.”

Residents may bring their non-perishable food donations to the following locations on Sept. 30-Oct. 3 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm:
*       Health Department Pittsboro Clinic, 80 East Street (behind Hardee’s)
*       Social Services Department, 102 Camp Drive, Pittsboro (entrance is off the traffic circle in front of Chatham Community Library on NC 87 North)
*       Health Department Siler City Clinic, 1000 South Tenth Avenue
*       Siler City Town Hall,  311 North Second Avenue, main lobby area where water bills are paid

“We greatly appreciate these county departments and the Siler City Administration for being willing to serve as drop-off points for food donations,” Stroupe said.

The following are often suggested items to donate: canned meats, such as ham and tuna; canned soups and chowders; canned fruits in light syrup; canned beans; canned vegetables; all-purpose baking mixes; maseca corn flour, corn meal and grits; boxed cereals (low in sugar); instant oatmeal; peanut butter; containers of rice and pasta; and canned baby food.
