Chatham Chatlist #4665

Thank you Donna and Gene for answering some of my questions concerning a recent post by Ms. Karen.

At this point it doesn’t matter, but it would be interesting to see  a job description for Sustainable Communities Director

But in particular relating to Wal-Mart,  Ms. Karen stated in a previous post:

-Virtually all Development had been shut down.
– Private investment in the county dropped to nearly 0.
– Businesses wouldn’t even look at Chatham County to locate in.
– Chatham businesses were leaving to go to surrounding counties.

There have been several postings relating to Wal-Mart.  All of the above possibly apply I do not have enough info to judge except I do know that local business do suffer when Wal-Mart “moves in†.  They go out of business or they move.  They can’t move to Siler City.  They really can’t move anywhere.  They just go away.  Is that sustainable?  I do not know?  I do know that there are a lot of low wage jobs and most Chatham Co. people do not benefit except maybe thru property tax collected from Wal-Mart but do the taxes they paid cover what they receive from Chatham Co. (mainly infrastructure and maintenance of the environment as in Jordan Lake)?

I continue to be disgusted by this left/right argument going on (of which I am sorry to say I have participated).  What happen to meeting in the middle and trying to work things out.  Things have gotten so extreme that everybody is PO’d.   A discussion can not take place because all the “facts†are just half-truths or outright lies.

HERE IS WHAT TERRY SAID IN A RECENT POST (God Bless Him and I must be a Marxist too!):

Subject: Count me among the Marxist

To the politically – aggressive person who does not use their name to call others names: Count me among the Marxists, or Socialist, or whatever label that you are trying to stick to people because here is what I have learned in five years of graduate school and 25 years of ministry;

Isaiah 65:17-25 outlines six characteristics of a healthy community from the heart of God:

• Public celebration and happiness (18, 19)
• Public health for children and the aged (20)
• Housing for all (21)
• Food for all (22)
• Meaningful work (22, 23)
• Family support systems (23)
• Absence of violence (25).
