Subject: options for avoiding herbicides under power lines

Hello Chatham Community,

Is anyone else upset about the use of herbicides to kill the vegetation underneath the power lines?  I realize it is the most cost effective way, and the land needs to remain clear under the power lines, but I find it completely unattractive. Not to mention, I would much rather see the plants, for their own sake, and for the health of the soil and groundwater, be cut and cleared rather than poisoned.

I am also not a fan of it being on my own driveway and land.  I am contacting the company to see if there are opt out options. As well I think it is only fair to notify all customers ahead of time, which was not the case.

I wish for a community where we care enough about our plants, our soil, and the experience of beautiful plants along our roads, to find another option.  In some other places, they have programs where they plant native low-growing vegetation so that the invasive fast-growing species are not given a chance to take over.  Even if each neighboring community came together to care for and plant long-term solutions in a small area of their roads, this could have such a profound impact on the experience of being in Chatham county, which is inherently beautiful and peaceful.  Once established this could be much more cost-effective, community-building, and attractive to all.

I imagine I am not the only person to witness this and wish for another way.

If other people have ideas of what is possible and healthy for our world in this circumstance, I welcome your input.

Thank you,
Kelsey
