Hi, I am operating a very small brewery in South Chapel Hill about a mile north of the 15-501/Smith Level Rd. intersection (aka Star Point). I am planning on brewing beer 3 weekends per month and delivering it to local restaurants and bars. My brewery is production only so there is no tasting room and it is not a public facility. I will be doing this while keeping my day job at UNC where I am a developer for the website system for UNC-CH courses.

I am interested to know if there are any local chicken, beef, or pork farmers that are interested in the spent grain from the brewing process? I use malted barley only. Most of it is basic 2-row barley with some that has been soaked and roasted to provide different flavor characteristics for the beer. I use a special mill-like device that cracks the kernels so the conversion of starches to sugars and then the extraction, are more efficient. It is not milled to flour at all. The spent grain is rinsed and excess water is drained. Then I load it into 55 gallon drums and place those on strong pallets with the drums strapped together.

This is sweet feed and should be used in addition to grasses and grains, etc. for hogs and cattle, never as the sole feed. Chickens can eat it straight though. I will be producing about 8-12 hundred pounds of damp grain per working weekend. Dry this would be around 450 -550 lbs. It will go rancid in a day if it is stored wet in the sun and will only be suitable for composting after that. BTW – it makes great compost.

I will be brewing a batch on Sunday if you would like to come get a sample to try.

Thanks,

Tim Harper
