Subject: Chatham School Redistricting – for board seats

The links in the post below relate to redistricting for the board of education election districts, not for redistricting schools. The only redistricting planned for next year is possibly moving some students from North Chatham to Perry Harrison since North Chatham is still at capacity and Perry Harrison is much under capacity – the families involved will be (or have been) notified individually.

The change is election districts is required by law. The local bill that was passed this summer says the Chatham Board of Education election districts will be changed after each census (and only after a census). The current districts are 20+ years old and do not reflect the current population distribution in the county.

Please look at MAP 4. These changes seem like the bus rides would be a lot longer for some.

Board of Education Seeks Public Input on Redrawing Residency Districts

The Chatham County Board of Education is in the process of redrawing its
residency districts.

Four versions of potential board residency redistricting maps were
presented and discussed during the October 3rd board meeting following an
initial discussion in September.  During the October 3rd meeting, the board
voted to have plan 4 as its proposed residency districting.  All four maps
are now available for public comment and, on Monday, November 7, the board
will hold a hearing during its meeting that begins at 6:30 PM in the
central office board room.  The board will make a final decision after the
public input period.

The maps are posted on the Chatham County Schools website under the following link:  http://bit.ly/nzQuHZ
During its 2011 session, the North Carolina General Assembly granted
permission to the Chatham County Board of Education to draw its own
residency districts.  The legislation also specified that board residency
redistricting would occur prior to the filing date for the 2012 elections.
