If the sounds originated from bombing exercises, the planes were from Pope Army Airfield at Fort Bragg or Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro. I remember seeing a sign at the Seymour Johnson entrance years ago. It read something like “Excuse our noise. It’s the sound of freedom.”
