It’s my understanding that the water bill increase is due to the Townsend shut down. Townsend was the main consumer of Pittsboro water and, thus, the cash cow which kept water rates low. As I remember, it used over half of the water capacity.
Just my idea of the problem. Some people at Powell Place have already challenged the town to do something. The town board tried to sell to the county. The county manager’s response was that distribution would be a problem from the point of the link to the county system. The county put out requests for rates and received lower rates form Sanford and Moore County. Siler City is not in the running either. It lost Townsend plant usage also and those poor people must pay a higher fee.
What good is a poultry plant? You’re finding out. Watch the bankruptcy rates for Chatham as poultry workers and farmers lose their homes. When that hits our economy, we will surely see higher taxes on top of water rates. The supporting businesses will suffer similar fates. Lets just hope that our retirees still have checks coming in and can pay the difference. Not too many of the rest can.
Then, think of the other people who want to close down all farming and poultry operations because some mussels have been “extirpated” on the Rocky River.
