I have also had this problem.
I believe the Extension service has info on how to flush out your system yourself.
In my case when I am gone in the summer time and little or no water washes through the pipes the bacteria grow. I usually go out and water the garden when I return home and flush out any odor and hopefully bacteria. If you decide to clean the system out with chlorox be sure to not let it go through the septic system by using the outside spigots when time to run it through.
Call the Extension and see if they still have that brochure.
