Subject: Fire in the Forest! Prescribed Burns Presentation and Field Trip with Mark Bost on April 9th

Saturday, April 9th from 9:30 to 11:30 AM:  Fire in the Forest!  Benefits of Prescribed Burns for Forest Health and Public Safety

Fire suppression threatens the healthy diversity of forests and wildlife habitat, and leads to a buildup of vegetative fuels in the forest’s understory that creates problems where urban areas and forestland meet. Prescribed burning is beneficial for forest health and wildlife habitat, as well as for public safety through the reduction in frequency and severity of wildfires.  Learn about the benefits of prescribed burning as a forest management tool, get fire safety tips for home and landscape, and visit examples of burned and unburned sites to see the differences in vegetative growth that come back after a burn.  Our guide will be Mark Bost with the NC Division of Forest Resources.  Register for this free trip by calling 919-545-8044.  Directions to this event:  Tour starts at the Jordan Lake Educational State Forest at 2832 Big Woods Road.  For a map, go to ncesf.org/images/jlesf/jlesfdirmap.gif.
