Posted below are the last of our Personal Enrichment classes for the
spring. Stay tuned for our summer listings

March 7-19, times are varied. Workshop dates are March 7, March 12,
March 13, March 14, March 19. Hot & Salty. This workshop is for those
potters that are beyond the beginner level of wheel throwing and
glazing. Students will learn the skills, techniques and safety issues
necessary to complete a successful cone 10 Salt firing. The course
includes wheel work, glazing, making wadding, cone packs, and kiln wash;
preparing the kiln, loading and firing. Instructor: Jennifer Siegel,
Siler City pottery studio. Cost: $152.

March 8-May 3, 6-9 pm. The Basics & More of Digital Photography.  Meg
Daniels, popular photographer and instructor will once again lead
students through principles and techniques of digital photography
including the types of settings available to you, how to compose for
more interesting images, depth of field (a term you will learn in
class), and composition. You will learn how to work through difficult
lighting situations and the proper settings necessary to color correct
for better exposures, color balance, and overall better photographs. A
camera that has a manual setting is best for this class.  Pittsboro
Campus. Cost $93.

March 10-April 4, 6-9 pm. Intermediate wheelthrowing.  If you have the
basics of wheelthrowing down and would like to advance to the next step,
then you will enjoy this class. Taught by long time instructor, Raymond
Edwards, this course will move you from the basics to the next step in
refining your wheelthrowing skills. Siler City pottery studio. Cost:
$70.

March 13-14, Advanced Pottery Techniques.  Students will receive
techniques that will further advance their throwing, decorating, and
finishing of pottery, based on the Leach-Cardew-Hewitt tradition.
Students will further their skills in pulling handles, trimming feet,
making lids, throwing with ribs, and decorating. Upon completion, one
will have the knowledge to make beautiful, functional pottery.
Instructor: Joseph Sand. Siler City pottery studio. Cost: $100.

March 13, 10-4 pm. So You Want to Write Children’s Book. This one day
workshop will give you the basic understanding of children’s book
genres from board books to adult novels. It will teach you to mine your
lives for children’s book ideas as well as introduce you to the
business of children’s book publishing as well familiarize you
w/resources and tools of the trade.  Instructor Kelly Starling Lyons is
a well known children’s author and publisher.  Pittsboro Campus. Cost:
$45.

March 20, 9-6 pm. Intro to Creative Journaling. This course is designed
to develop students’ free writing ability through prompts and creative
writing exercises. Emphasis will be placed on quieting the internal
editor to brainstorm ideas and generate first drafts.

April 23-24. Raku Firing. This course is designed to teach students the
Raku process. Course work includes, setting up the kiln and mixing
glazes.  Instructor: Raymond Edwards. Siler City pottery studio and Sage
Academy. Cost: $56.25.

April 24. 2-5 pm. Be the bamboo: Writing to Engage in Life
Moment-Moment.  Basho, the 17th century Japanese haiku poet, said about
writing: “Learn of the pine from the pine; learn of the bamboo from
the bamboo.†This workshop will explore what he meant in terms of the
kind of attention that enables a writer to create vivid descriptions and
communicate the true essence of something whether it be pine, bamboo or
black buzzards dancing on a tin roof. This workshop will include
practice in observation through sight, taste and smell and writing about
these observations. Examples of good, descriptive writing will be read
aloud and discussed. These examples will be drawn from such writers as
the poets Basho, Pablo Neruda, Mary Oliver and Elizabeth Bishop and
fiction writers Virginia Woolf, Cormac McCarthy and James Lee Burke.
Discussion will also provide insight into how paying close attention,
whether it be alone in nature or with another person, can enhance life.
Instructor:  Susan Broili.  Pittsboro Campus. Cost: $40.

April 24-25, 1-5 pm.  Introduction to Hand Papermaking w/Plants. This
workshop will provide an introduction to the art of papermaking using
plant fibers and recycled materials. Students will be able to make paper
at home w/a blender and common kitchen tools. Upon completion of the
workshop students will have the skills required to make their own cards
and journals in their home kitchen.  Instructor: Ann Silverman.
Pittsboro Campus, Land Lab. Cost: $50.

May 5. 9-3 pm. Self-Publishing Basics.  Adrienne Ehlert-Bashista is the
owner of drt press, a Pittsboro micro press. She is also an author of
two picture books and several children’s short stories.  In this
workshop, Adrienne will teach students why and how to self publish and
help start the process of self-publishing  Topics of who should self
publish, why people self publish, what are the steps to take when
self-publishing, determining a market; how big do you want to be and
manuscript preparation/design will be covered.
