Putting Food Up By
Chatham County Center – North Carolina Cooperative Extension will of offering “Putting Food “UP” By”, Food Preservation classes on June 2nd and June 23rd.  We have heard your requests.  Come out and join Phyllis Smith, Chatham County and Bess Hester-Whitt, Person County, Family and Consumer Science Extension Agents as we work to help our local gardeners be ready to put aside their garden’s bounty!

In the first session in June 2nd, we’ll be covering the basics, going over the equipment needed, and why some foods can be canned using the boiling water bath and others need the pressure canner.  We will do one session at 10 am and another repeat of that at 6 pm.  Pressure canner owners are asked to bring in their dial gauge lids so we can check their accuracy and ensure proper pressures when they are used this summer.

On June 23rd, we’ll actually do some hands on canning, and touch on drying, freezing and jams and jellies.  Again we’ll offer a session at 10 am and a repeat at 6pm.  Class sizes will be limited since we are doing hands on and we ask that you attend both sessions in the two part series.

A registration fee of $20.00 for the classes  which will cover the cost of materials (including the newest edition of “Ball Blue Book for Canning”) for both sessions.  Fees are NON-Refundable.  Limited space, so first-come, first-serve.   Registration deadline is Thursday, May 28th.  For additional information regarding the “Putting Food “UP” By”, contact Phyllis Smith, RD, LDN, Family and Consumer Science Extension Agent, email or phone 919-5423-8202.  Get ready to can so you can enjoy your own bounty this winter!
