FREE IRS-Certified VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) for Chatham County — Legal Aid of North Carolina-Pittsboro Office will be preparing taxes for eligible filers on Saturday, April 4, 2009 in their local office at 959 East Street, Suit A, Pittsboro, NC  27312.  Please call for an appointment – 919-542-0475 or 1-800-672-5834.

This is the 2nd year Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) – Pittsboro office has served as a VITA/Tax Assistance Project (TAP) tax preparation site. IRS-Certified Volunteers at LANC-Pittsboro will prepare taxes and electronically file tax returns for eligible persons in an effort to help low income tax filers maximize their returns. Free e-filing of both federal and state returns is provided. In most instances, refunds will be sent to taxpayers who select direct deposit within seven business days of filing the return.

Please help us encourage eligible taxpayers to use this free tax preparation service. Each year taxpayers lose money when filing tax returns.  This is due primarily to a failure to file for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the fact that taxpayers can pay anywhere from $180-$400 per return plus fees that may be added for e-filing both state and federal returns. In addition, taxpayers who obtain Refund Anticipation Loans (RALs) against their anticipated tax refund will pay interest on their own money and those who opt for the convenience of the preloaded debit cards may find hidden fees and deadlines.

A complete list of free tax preparation sites for 2008 for North and South Carolina is available at www.eitc-carolinas.org. Taxpayers may also call 1-800-331-7594 to find a free tax preparation site in the local area.  You can also check our website www.legalaidnc.org for other Tax Assistance information.
