Eat more deer

I’ve been around Chatham long enough to remember when NC Wildlife was live-trapping deer in Butner and releasing them here. Inadvertently, the deer brought the ticks, and the ticks brought the pathogens. This accidental release of pathogens by a well-intentioned government program back in the 60s was brought to mind recently when a germ warfare lab was proposed for that same Butner. An ironic twist, but, thankfully, the government decided to locate their lab elsewhere.

Meanwhile, we are left with the deer, the ticks and the disease.

I can see only one way to deal with deer: eat them. They are free-range. Organic. Local. Delicious. Why are we arguing about something that tastes this good? We need to start thinking of these animals as a food source rather than a source of sport. The sport is gone for many, and was never there for others. The sport was there when the woods were big and the deer were rare.. True, we still have some big woods and some outstanding sportsmen. But as for the suburban deer: next time you see $100 dollars worth of meat standing in your yard, think about it.
