Walltown Children’s Theatre will be presenting their nationally heralded Spanish-language version of Romeo and Juliet at Jordan Matthews High School Auditorium on Friday, November 21st. This version is set in a small Mexican village in the 1930’s; Romeo and Juliet come from families at opposite ends of the socio-economic spectrum. Aspects of Mexican music, culture, and images have been incorporated into this production.

This presentation is part of a weeklong residency scheduled at Jordan Matthews High School and Chatham Middle School. The director of the production, Joseph Henderson, will be holding two workshops a day from
Monday, November 17th through Thursday, November 20th. During these one-hour workshops, students will participate in readings of scenes from the show in both Spanish and English. They will also take time to study the history of the text, as well as the issues raised by the story. These workshops are intended for both native Spanish speakers and students studying Spanish in the local schools.

Four local Latino/a students will be given the opportunity to rehearse with cast and participate in a dance scene during the production.

Four counties in North Carolina were chosen to receive this program for one week each; Chatham is honored to be included and the Chatham Arts Council is thrilled to be selected as a collaborator and sponsor. The Chatham County Arts Council coordinates 7-10 arts in education residencies per year throughout the county.
