Subject: Leo on the mend with C.A.R.E.
Pittsboro, NC – Chatham Animal Rescue and Education. relies on the community to support its mission. For some animals it is critical that someone cares enough to take that first step by showing compassion and getting involved; Leo is just such an animal. A kind neighbor rescued Leo from a home where he had been abandoned and left in a crate for two days with no food and water. Lying in his own waste, Leo had done the
only thing he could to try and escape; he head butted the door of the crate in an attempt to free himself. Despite his barking, cries and obvious injuries he remained in the crate until saved by a kind and
caring neighbor. Once contacted about Leo, C.A.R.E. volunteers immediately got involved and sought out medical attention for this pup.
Leo was dehydrated and in desperate need of nutrition. For two days he was given fluids subcutaneously and given small amounts of food every two hours, so as not to overwhelm his body with too much, too fast. Leo
weighed an astonishing 25 lbs when he was found, about half of what a dog of his breed (Boxer) and age should weigh.
Leo is now on the road to recovery. It is estimated that it will take one month before he gains enough weight to be considered in his normal range and available for adoption. Fitting in quite nicely with his temporary foster home, Leo is very appreciative of every morsel of food, drink of water, and loving pat on the head he receives. This lucky little guy got a second shot at life and he is enjoying every second of it!
Most of us can’t imagine missing a meal or going to bed hungry but for those who are less fortunate; this is a reality. C.A.R.E. foster homes are quite accustomed to getting a dog or cat that has been abandoned or
turned into a shelter and providing the love and medical attention that they need. Good nutrition, basic obedience skills and socialization with other animals are goals that foster caregivers aspire and commit to in
the hopes of finding the animal a forever home to continue the lifelong journey of care and love.
C.A.R.E. would like to say thank you to all of the “neighbors” who take it upon themselves to show compassion–they are crucial to our mission and to assisting in ending the suffering of animals such as Leo.
