Construction Forces Partial Closure of Community College Trail in Pittsboro

PITTSBORO-Construction of the new Chatham Community Library  on the Pittsboro campus of Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) means  that the northern section of its fitness trail will be temporarily closed,  effective Monday, Sept. 22.  The northern part of the trail will be closed  until construction is completed in the early fall of 2009.

“We regret that we have to close any part of the trail, but for  safety and construction access, we had no choice,” said Karen Allen, Chatham County Provost for CCCC. “Fortunately, we are able to keep more than half of it open.”

According to Allen, the public will still be able to use the portion of the trail from just above Building 2’s parking lot, heading south and then east across the main entry driveway, turning north along NC 87, but ending at the construction entrance on NC 87.

The closed section includes the northern part of the trail that  heads east from Building 2’s upper parking lot all the way to NC 87, including the trail entrance to the Senior Center. This also closes a short spur  that joins the back patio of Building 2 to the fitness trail.

“It is important to note that the access point at the Senior Center is closed and that trail will not make a continuous loop during this period,” said Allen. “Those using the trail will have to turn around to return to their starting point.”

The closed sections of the trail will be clearly marked and some of or all of it will be eventually be enclosed by a construction fence, said Assistant County Manager Renee Paschal, who is working with Barnhill Contracting Co. on the project.

Paschal added that “we hope that those using the trail will not try to use NC 87 as an option for extending the trail or as a starting and ending point. NC 87 does not have sidewalks in this area and would be dangerous for pedestrians.”
