Just thought that this was a good comment sent to me about the restaurants coming to PBO and I thought I would share what the comment was to me and what I wrote back. I didn’t put who wrote this to me because they sent it to my personal email.

Sorry you have had to work so hard and make so little, it does stink. I don’t think people working in McD’s are going to make all that much either. They are pretty low paying jobs. In order to get a good paying job, you have to have certain skills. That means getting more education. Mall jobs are low skilled jobs and don’t pay a lot and will not raise the income of the area that much, considering the strain it will put on the resources of the county. The community college is a wonderful resource and offers all kinds of courses. You can pick up one or two and when the opportunity presents itself, you can take more. There are also scholarships available. I agree that there aren’t many places to eat around P’boro, especially to a stranger. It is not a destination, it is on the way to somewhere else. I am retired and don’t have to worry about that now, but I take a course now and then just to keep from getting too stale. I worry about all the trash a McD’s and Taco Bells will add to the already trashed up roads.

Me:

What you have said is totally true but it’s a catch 22. You have to work to go to college. Most students can’t get the financial aid they need to cover all of college and they don’t give you a check until after you have finished the semester. You still have to purchase all of the books and have to go full time to get financial aid or scholarships too. I want to take classes and tried but I cannot afford to take classes full time and I have to put my kids in daycare. Those jobs are somewhat low paying the management makes good money and the workers can do ok but it’s better than having no job at all.

Let me also just say that I had a very well paying job for years and made very good money but when I had my kids I couldn’t drive that far anymore because of daycare costs and gas. It was cheaper for me to stay at home. I have worked some low paying jobs just so I could get healthcare, which I don’t have now. Alot of those restaurants offer medical coverage to the employees. That is necessary these days and I wish that I had medical insurance again. If one of those restaurants comes to PBO I will be able to go there for work. I can then get medical coverage again, I won’t have to drive to Sanford, Greensboro, Raleigh, etc…   I wish that I could find something local. I also believe that if PBO builds up more there will be other companies willing to come to the area that would supply more better paying jobs. That is just my opinion though. Thanks for your comment.
