First, thanks to Forrest Greenslade for his excellent piece. I fully agree with him. Just today, when peeling and slicing a cucumber, I thought I heard it squeal! And BTW, considering “lesser” members of the animal kingdom, nobody has commented on my remarks about eating oysters and clams served on the half shell, which are still alive not only when they are pried open by a knife, but when they actually go into one’s mouth. And snails! I have eaten great snail dishes in Germany and Spain. Some of the profit-driven, big-box
supermarkets have live lobster tanks, where you can buy these innocent creatures, take them home, drop them into boiling water, and enjoy their delicious meat. I don’t know if they (or the oysters) suffer pain. Maybe the Union of Concerned Scientists could tell us.

Then, Brenda Denzler says Steve Candelori is wrong to call Aurora the Hipvegan an “elitist”. I think it is undeniable that she is an elitist in that she obviously considers herself morally superior to all of us who eat meat and who would like a McDonald’s, or any other meat-serving place, in our community. So, before each meal, we should consider what damage is being inflicted on other members of the animal kingdom (and, as Forrest says, veggies too) by our insatiable desire to eat, eat, eat. After all, they were here first!
