Subject: Land Transfer Tax
Not to be pushy, but there is a lot of disinformation out there about this “tax”. I hope you will vote this Tuesday and will vote yes for the Land Transfer Tax. It is a tax I will never have to pay because I live here all ready. And if we ever sell our house and property, the buyer will pay the percentage, just like closing costs.
The only tool Chatham has to raise money for capital improvements is the existing tax on personal property. The LTT targets folks moving into the county directly. It takes over twenty years for subdivisions to pay for the services they require up front like schools, 911 services, libraries, etc. For years residential developers have not paid for the infrastructural needs of the people they are selling land and homes to. You and I have. And it is breaking the county’s financial backbone. This “tax” gets money up front from these folks so that the cost of these services are not paid for by our personal property taxes; i.e. this tax will keep our property taxes lower!
This is a no brainer.
