Subject: Speaking Out
I read the chatlist whenever I get the chance, but rarely write in. Recently, I have been reading more often in pursuit of commentary about corridor zoning, water usage, land planning, etc, when recent unexpected topics seized my attention and now have motivated me to join the discussion.
My biggest complaint with the dawning of a sterilized McAmerica is the lack of well expressed opinion on controversial subjects and the pervasive reaction that disagreeing is somehow offensive. I’m not condoning judgemental rants and slanderous yelling matches, but holding up the principle that through the discussion of opposing viewpoints, and the meeting of the differing minds, perspectives are widened, and common ground discovered. At the very least, one learns more about how to define one’s personal opinion.
It alarms me when people advocate “keeping your views to yourself” in the interest of “business” or community “appearances”. I am not suggesting that controversial subject matter & opinion be forced on people not interested in discussion, however the very nature of a chatlist is an open forum to express views. All views are welcome, certainly when conveyed in a constructive manner.
I will always seek out people who speak their mind; I will patronize their business, seek their friendship, welcome them into my circle. I reflect on the strength of my convictions in the face of mutual disagreement. I will try my best not to insult their view – I fall short here sometimes – and try at length to convince them of my perspective.
Please always give me straight answers. My 2¢.
