Regarding the post Subject: A PLEA FOR THE DEER WHO CALL PITTSBORO HOME
Well it seems very heart felt what is being said here but it is wildly misinformed. Lyme Disease and RMSF are not scare tactics they are scary and awful and directly related to the population of DEER in town and in this county. There are more deer now than at any time in history exactly because we don’t hunt. The herds are out of control and the best deed you could do for the scrawny deer of Chatham county is hunt them… or bring back the wolf and lion that used to control the herds. Since I doubt parents and dog owners will be at all willing to do this, then please hunt as many deer as you possibly can.

At the risk of being vilified by vegans and animal lovers, I support any efforts to reduce the deer population.
Keep in mind that without deer control, there will be no vegetables to put on the table. I have lost two years of garden and talked to many who have given up on gardening. Chatham has a vital group of organic farmers growing and selling produce. They need protection from the deer, not to mention the home gardeners who raise and put up food. Of course, we could always pay twice the price for tomatos to pay for twelve foot high fencing and electrifying everything.

Nothing better for the health and welfare of Chatham County than fewer deer.
May the coyotes feed and feed some more.

Subject: Deer and Ticks (and songbirds, too)
As a former resident of NC (Chatham Forest), and one of many diagnosed with RMSF just on my block, I would like for all the “Deer Huggers” to understand that in many parts of the country, there is a great interest in trying to understand the correlation between vector populations and disease occurances.? Yes, other furry rodents are vectors for ticks.
But the vast majority are deer.
And deer travel the farthest.
And deer carry more ticks/animal.
Please read this important study on deer as vectors for disease-carrying ticks:

Subject: I would like to comment on a couple old threads
I would like to comment on a couple ofl threads that have been on the chatlist recently.
The first is in regards to the deer population. This discussion began with tick born diseases. Nowhere was it mentioned that deer are only one of the vectors in the ticks life cycle. Another and just as important vector is/are rodents (bye the bye they carry many diseases). These animals have many natural preditors but the one that many peoiple misunderstand and fear are the various snakes that live here. Many think that the only good snake is a dead one but they are beneficial and should be left alone unless they actually pose a danger to people.

Subject: Plants that deer do not eat
I believe that Sherri posted the following in regard to the recent herd of comments about deer:
“plant items that are not deer-friendly. That is what I do. Example, never plant hosta as this is a true delight for deer — as is tulips — instead put in zinnias, marigolds, petunias, etc.”
I have planted deer-resistant plants/shrubs such as holly and have also sprayed the plants/shrubs with products such as Deer Off, etc. The deer still visit my yard and even my patio to munch away. Perhaps Sherri could do us all a favor and post a list of plants that are truly deer-resistant. Thanks in advance.

The deer question:
Let me say up front that I do not have the answer to the various problems involved in human encounters with deer. But management of the deer herd in Chatham County and the entire state of North Carolina is the province of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (WRC).

Subject: Oh, deer! Many thanks to Aaron Honeycutt.
What an excellent posting by Aaron Honeycutt recently explaining the lives and habits of deer. Since moving to the country in Chatham 11 years ago, I have thoroughly enjoyed observing the many deer that come into my yard, mostly due to the deer corn I leave them. My nearby neighbor hunts them. I was an avid bird hunter in my younger days, but have never cared to hunt deer. I enjoy venison and have been to many a deer pickin’ in my home county of Nash.

Thirty years ago I met my husband of 24 years. He hunted almost anything edible and between my garden and his hunting we bought only the bare necessities from the stores. At first I hated the fact that he killed the little Bambis. Since I have lived in the very rural area of Chatham County I want every visible deer killed. They destroy my decorative and edible plants – all my gardens. We have two herds on our 75 acre farm each of around 20 deer.
