Good morning, Goodnight Mark,

We can disagree, but we do not have to be disagreeable. I sense a lot of fear in your reply and I can assure you that you that as FDR wisely said “…you have nothing to fear but fear itself.â€

Since Commissioner Bock ran on a platform of “efficiency†and “streamlining†it seemed downright reasonable to share Tom Sullivan’s quote about the meaning of those words and how that particular idea manifests in practice:

“Limited government is their code for stripping America for parts.-Tom Sullivan, Asheville Citizen Times, 8/24/14â€

I have met Mr. Sullivan and he is very concerned about water quality, the coal ash spill in the Dan River, and fracking. Of course he is quite sensitive about local water due to the extreme-GOP’s takeover of Asheville’s system. If you want to learn more about water issues in that area you can also check out Tate McQueen, who is running for congress in the 10 Congressional District and has fought against the pollution of the water wells in his area by ETS.

However, since you were most concerned about the source of the quote here is one from the 19th century:

“What is a cynic? A man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.†Oscar Wilde

I would say that sums of up the critiques leveled on me by you and Taylor Kish. Neither of you seem to grasp of the value of the intangible nor by the tone of the emails, apparently our Hispanic Community, either.

As for governing from a set of values that have a moral imperative and center I am joined by a vast number of citizens in the Moral Monday movement, who believe that the governance in Raleigh and its recent spate of legislation is wrongheaded, mean spirited, scrooge like, and lacking a moral compass.

Read Luke 6:20 to 6:48 and try to tell the world that Christ was describing the “austere†philosophy of the right wing, which philosophically, by the way, was espoused by Commissioner Bock when he was the Chatham County GOP Party Chair and has now been put into practice by him and is rubber stamped by Commissioner Stewart.

As for your assertions regarding the moral turpitude of Democrats I have two replies: 1) mistakes and bad behavior are unfortunately made by elected officials of both parties; 2) Are you kidding me with your response? Gov. McCrory has been cited for ethics violations regarding Duke Power and his stock holdings, State Rep. LaRoque was indicted and the entire mismanagement of DHHS is a farce, but here are some GOP names for you to remember: Richard Nixon, Albert Fall, Andrew Hinshaw, Bernard Kerik, Bill Janklow, Brian J. Doyle, Buzz Lukens, Catalina Vasquez Villalpando, Charles R. Forbes, Charles W. Colson, David Durneberger, Deborah Gore Dean, Caspar Weinberger, Duke Cunningham, Dwight Chapin, Elliot Abrams, Ernest Bramblett, George Hansen, H.R. Haldeman, J. Irving Whalley, J. Parnell Thomas, James F. Hastings, James G. Watt, Jay Kim, Jeb Stuart Magruder, Mark Foley, Larry Craig, John Mitchell, John Ehrlichman, Lewis Libby, Oliver North, Michael Deaver, Lester Crawford et al. Furthermore the investments that Howard, Hales and Crawford will make as commissioners will enhance our county and make it more desirable. You assume that taxes will be raised countywide, but there are strategies for keeping the taxes lower in rural areas and preserving our farmland without running our folks off of their land.

Investing in our towns and county is the prudent and wise way to manage for all citizens and residents of the county and I fail to understand why a government that centers its values to benefit the working class, the middle class, students, young people, retirees, farmers and professionals is a bad way to go.

As for the schools, they got to the place they are today because of investment made by Democrats not the local GOP.

The entire Board of Education has been run by Democrats for years and the big investments that have paid dividends for our schools were made by Democrats.

Your team may be able to put frosting on the cake, but we got the ingredients, made the batter and baked the cake.

And your team passed a resolution supporting charter schools and has not opposed school vouchers, either.

As for the rest of your critique it reads like one of the Limbaugh infused rants I typically see bouncing around the internet. And as you proclaimed on the chatlist you may not be a racist nor a bigot, but you appear to have little “jimmy crow†perched on your shoulder–especially in your pointed rhetoric toward immigrants and the Hispanic community.

In closing you are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to mine and if you needed help I would lend it gladly, but I respectfully disagree with most of the points you raised in your reply.

Have a great day,

V. Penley
