Volunteers from Chatham Animal Rescue and Education (C.A.R.E.) will be at the Chatham County Animal Shelter on Landfill Road in Pittsboro August 11 from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. Chatham County residents whose household income is $40,000 per year or less can register cats and dogs for the next spay/neuter clinic which will be held August 25th. Dr. Wendy Royce of Pet Overpopulation Patrol will be doing the surgery in her mobile hospital at the WalMart in Siler City. Proof of income and a co-pay of $20 is required to register. Kittens (over 2#) and puppies (under 4 months of age) can be fixed for $5 if the mother is spayed at the same time. Please help us spread the word to relatives, friends and neighbors who qualify. The shelter is overloaded this time of year with unwanted animals, many of whom will not be adopted. Call 542-5757 for more information or email C.A.R.E. from our website www.chathamanimalrescue.org.

Gene wrote as a result of me, for one, receiving this: "This message has been processed by Symantec's AntiVirus Technology. Unknown00000000.data was not scanned for viruses because too many nested levels of files were found."
I did not open the attachment after receiving this cryptic (to me) msg. But #2871 has come through fine, as usual. Now, is there any way I can see what I missed in Digest #2870 ? Is it safe for me to open the attachment? Thanks. Kira

I would like to heartily agree with Katherine Ladd and Dan Calhoon with their recent posts concerning the Pittsboro Folly. Please put this thing out on the bypass. NOT IN TOWN! It will be a knife in the heart of the lovely town that people are coming to Pittsboro to enjoy. We don't need to draw more people with this monstrosity. We need tax dollars but this is the absolutely WRONG way to go about it. Be strong to resist the notion that we need this type of development in town. It is the blight on the ripening tomato of locally owned and operated business. Say NO to rezoning the industrial park!!!!!! Most Sincerely, Snowflake

All this talk of needing restaurants and movie theaters and shops is all true. But it doesn't have to be the mega mall disaster.
I toured the Carolina Brewery yesterday and there is NOTHING LIKE IT in Chatham. I'm dubbing the walk in beer cooler with it's 20' ceiling and huge vats of brew "Chatham's Second Man Made Wonder". The first of course would be Jordan Lake. The big difference here being you can't drink what's in the lake.....
It seat 200+ with a private meeting room upstairs (much needed in these parts).
It's got a wholesale brew business. And while it offers jobs like most service industry jobs do...lower pay and attractive to high school/college kids...it's a great place to work.
THESE are the businesses we need. Local. Home grown. The owner is a UNC grad and lives here in Chatham with his family. He has a vested interest.
I do worry about the traffic in and out of the Lowe's complex. It's poorly lit, and can get really hairy. I guess there's going to be a light there???
Anyway, I'm sick of going out of county for so many things....but this P.Place is not the answer. There are other ways of having our cake....and not choking on it. The Brewery is just the first of many hopefully. I hear there is going to be a theater in that same complex?
Remember...Carolina Brewery opens for dinner on the 6th of August.....4 pm to 11pm Open for lunch and dinner starting the 20th of Aug.....11 am to 11 pm
There also a retail shop next door where you can get quick to go stuff open TOMORROW from 7-7.
Support local....not the out of towner carpet baggers.
Thanks, Meg

"Growth is inevitable" is a phrase I hear often these days, but it is not entirely accurate. CHANGE is inevitable; GROWTH is optional. Think about it.

"My Life in France" is Book Discussion for August 6
The Pittsboro Memorial Library book club's August selection is "My Life in France" by Julia Child, assisted by her great-nephew Alex Prud'homme. With Julia Child's death in 2004 at age 91, Prud'homme completed this playful memoir of the famous chef's first, formative sojourn in France with her new husband, Paul Child, in 1949. The result was Julia Child's bringing her joie de vivre—and classic recipes—to American kitchens for decades. Join the discussion on Monday, August 6, at 7:00 PM in the Reeves Gallery at the library,158 West St, Pittsboro (542-3524).
New members and one-time visitors are welcome. For more information, call the library or visit <http://www.pittsborolibraryfriends.org/> www.pittsborolibraryfriends.org.

Hi Phyllis,
I believe that you are referring to the program offered through Chatham Animal Rescue and Education (CARE).
We offer spay days usually on the 3rd Saturday of every month at the WalMart in Siler City. You must be a Chatham County resident and have an annual household income of less than $40,000.
To request an application you can call 919-542-5757, or go to the CARE web site to send an email to dog spay/neuter or cat spay/neuter.
Thanks for your interest in this!

Thanks for your help.

How far can a dream take one person? Most would tell you they have dreams or that dreams are unrealistic fantasies meant to give people false hope. I disagree, dreams can become reality, but we must first believe in ourselves and have the vision to see them through. A dream can be an amazing and powerful thing but it can also be a dangerous one at least to those who fear change. To those in Siler City who fear change, and those who would rather have the poor suffer for their own benefit, I say to you embrace change, help your neighbors, and relinquish the good ole days, for there are even better days ahead. My dream for Siler City embraces our mill town roots while embracing new technology and emerging industry. By promoting our location and infrastructure, and combining it with a solid plan for growth and unique ideas, our city could become a major hub for business, and link the gap between the triad, triangle, and all other areas of North Carolina. While having a vision for our city I also have faith that by bringing the people of our city together we can not only accomplish great things but we can fulfill a dream, a dream not only my own but one that is shared by everyone in the city. If you believe that Siler City should be more than it is, if you believe that the potential is here for greater things and the city just needs the vision to make it happen, and if you believe in the dream of a better Siler City, I ask for your support. If you can't vote I ask that you spread the word of my candidacy to all who can vote and let them know they have a chance to change things in this city for the better, and if you can vote then do so on November 6th and elect Jonus Nobles mayor of Siler City. I for one am not either for or against it but I know I do not and I repeat do not want more industry. Who wants to look at industrial buildings that don't benefit everyone as a whole. I don't. I rather see a cheery shopping center. I would rather take my family to a nice dinner and go shopping. Everybody is sounding like Chicken Little with the sky falling. I do not want to spend my money in Cary or Apex any more. I don't think the business community in downtown Pittsboro should worry because their shops are unique and we would still shop there. At this point in my life I am tired of always driving out of town. I want it in town. Let them build industry somewhere else. Look at Research Triangle Park now isn't that a industrial traffic nightmare. This is just my opinion and how I feel and I have lived here a very long time. Ace

Is There Dogfighting In Your Own Neighborhood? How to Recognize the Deadly Signs and Take Action
Last week’s indictment of NFL quarterback Michael Vick on charges related to dogfighting has brought national attention to the extreme cruelty of this criminal industry. The Humane Society of the United States, which has campaigned against dogfighting for decades, has found it thriving in both urban and rural areas, and believes that it is on the rise.
Concerned citizens in every community can take steps to identify and report the presence of dogfighting in their communities. Lawmakers have recently passed HSUS-backed legislation to strengthen animal fighting laws in many jurisdictions, and individuals involved in dogfighting face serious penalties if they are prosecuted. Telltale signs include: An inordinate number of dogs, often pit bulls, kept in one location, chained and apparently unsocialized. Signs of or the obvious presence of a fighting pit. Dogs with scars on their faces, front legs and stifle area (hind end and thighs). Dogfighting training equipment such as rawhide or tires hanging from trees (that dogs jump up and grab onto) or treadmills. The remains of dead fighting animals outside a suspicious location. A large number of missing pets. Individuals involved in dogfighting are known to steal cats and smaller dogs for using in training. Unusual foot traffic coming and going from a location at odd hours. Pit bulls can be wonderful family pets, but when they're mistreated by irresponsible owners they can become so damaged that they are dangerous.
The HSUS urges those who suspect dogfighting in their neighborhoods to alert local law enforcement. Local officials can contact The HSUS for practical tools, advice and assistance with investigations and prosecution.
The HSUS has urged the NFL to not allow Vick to play while these charges are pending, and has pressed Nike to end its association with him until the case is resolved. For the most up-to-date information on the Vick case, and a daily blog by The HSUS President Wayne Pacelle with the latest calls-to-action, visit The HSUS website, www.humanesociety.org.
The HSUS offers a standing $2,500 reward for information leading to a conviction of illegal dogfighting.
