Support adult literacy at author luncheon

Join us at the Chatham County Literacy Council’s April 6 Authors for Literacy Luncheon, where Piedmont Laureate Scott Huler will talk about his latest book, “On the Grid,” and answer questions from the audience.

The author is a nationally published journalist and author of six non-fiction books, and an award-winning commentator who has appeared on public radio programs including “All Things Considered,” “Day to Day” and WUNC’s “The State of Things.”

Howard Lee, executive director of the North Carolina Education Cabinet, will introduce Huler and serve as the luncheon’s master of ceremonies. Lee, a longtime education advocate, is a former Chapel Hill mayor, state senator and chairman of the State Board of Education.

The 2nd annual Authors for Literacy luncheon will be at Governors Club in northern Chatham County. It will begin at 11:30 a.m., with music by Allan Sandford Brown – an author and improvisational jazz pianist – and a silent auction that includes dinners and golf outings, theater and symphony tickets, works by local artists, a centerpiece from

Blossom, and more.

A live auction will feature a pair of tickets to a UNC men’s basketball game, gourmet dinners, a Carnival cruise, a one-year membership at the Duke Center for Living’s Health & Fitness Center, and luxurious treatments at The Spa at Fearrington.

All proceeds will be used to fund the literacy council’s free tutoring programs for Chatham County adults who cannot read, write or speak English well enough to reach their goals, or who want to study to become U.S. citizens. The council offers small-group classes in Pittsboro, Siler City and northern Chatham County, and one-on-one

tutoring throughout the county.

The luncheon is $50 per person, $28 of which is a tax-deductible donation to the literacy council. To register and pay online, go to www.chathamliteracy.org. The registration deadline is March 30.
