Night Navigators: Bats!

When: September 19th from 6:45 pm to 8:00 pm

Where:  Bynum Mill Access at the Lower Haw River State Natural Area on 160 Bynum Church Road

Directions:  From US Hwy 15-501, turn onto Durham-Eubanks Road. If coming from Chapel Hill, this will be a left turn before the Haw River. If coming from Pittsboro, this will be a right turn after crossing the Haw River. Follow Durham-Eubanks Road to the stop sign. Go straight at the stop sign and continue uphill on Bynum Church Road past the church and then downhill to the large State Parks parking lot on the right.

Learn all about Bats with Friends of Lower Haw!  Bats are some of nature’s most misunderstood animals. North Carolina’s bats are all insectivores and important for insect control. Get to know bats in our state, learn more about fact versus fiction, learn about threats bats are facing, and marvel at how bats use echolocation to navigate in the dark. Echolocation is emitting high-pitched sounds beyond the range of human hearing to navigate and hunt. During this program we will use Echometers to listen to and identify nearby bats that might otherwise be difficult to detect. Our program leader will be Brooke Massa, Northern Fish & Wildlife Conservation Planner with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. This evening program is free, fun and fascinating for all ages but children must be accompanied by an adult. State Parks Interpretation & Education staff will have a table there with simple bat activities to entertain folks arriving early.
