Chatham Arts Council (CAC) is on the way to making Chatham County the first in the state to have an Artists-in-Schools (https://bit.ly/AIS2024_25) residency in every public school in the county.
This week, kids in northwest Chatham will be awed by the daring adventures of Henry “Box” Brown, an enslaved man who shipped himself to freedom. Mike Wiley (http://mikewileyproductions.com/), with the help of audience members at Siler City and Virginia Cross Elementary schools, will perform his one-man play “One Noble Journey” (http://mikewileyproductions.com/#s-performances), which chronicles Henry’s courageous escape. Then, students will attend classroom workshops with Mike and fellow playwright and poet Howard Craft, to explore creative writing using fun–sometimes even silly–prompts for poems and original character creation.
Mike will also bring inspiration to teachers at both schools through a special writing and acting workshop.
“It was just so creative and fun.” – Chatham fifth-grader after a Mike Wiley residency
CAC’s Artists-in-Schools Initiative is unique in that we never ask teachers, principals, or administrators to find funding for our residencies. We fund our initiative with support from businesses and individuals in this community–and through partnerships with the NC Arts Council and Chatham County.
