Hello, so glad to hear you want to learn about fishing.
Now is the time to get gear and start planning because around March-April is the time when you’ll hear about “take-a-kid-fishing” events, usually at Jordan Lake.
But you don’t have to wait for that. There are many shore-based fishing spots around the lake (just go to their website).
As for tackle, all you need is a pole/rod, some bait, cooler/bucket and patience.
Oh yeah, and a fishing license for you if you don’t meet certain requirements (visit NC Division of Natural Resources) to find out more.
Or just visit a local Walmart and talk to the person manning the sports department or talk to any of the many store owners near the lake or any lake that interests you. You can also usually pick up the information booklets at any place that sells gear or bait.
A word of caution; any “new” sport can get real expensive, real quick. Be advised to start out slow and don’t expect success every time out, because it’s not the catching, it’s the fishing that counts.
Good Luck!
