“And I have personally seen volunteers come in the nursing home and harvest ballots from demented elderly. Facilitation? or Fraud?
John Dykers
My mother voted in every election until her death, even when she was demented. My dad helped her towards the end. They didn’t always agree politically, and I wonder whether he helped her vote according to her political beliefs or his. I’m sure she had no idea of what was happening the last time or two she voted.
Since then, I have thought there should be a competency test to vote (a test of basic political knowledge would be good too–like who are your elected officials, who are on the Supreme Court, but I digress.) However, given the history of voting rights in this country, any discussion of who should be allowed vote or not would be so fraught as to be meaningless.
Since the beginning of the Republic, people have probably helped others vote, either honestly, or not. And, there has always been a degree of fraud — remember the probable Chicago ballot box stuffing in the 1960?
Yet, the Republic has survived and will continue to do so, provided we don’t go off the rails.
