Subject: Mr. Crawford’s Post in Chatlist #5717
I ordinarily stay away from politics, especially in Chatlist, but this crosses over into an issue of human rights, in particular the rights of little children to be free from fear.
In Chatham Chatlist # 6517 there is published a post from Mr. Bill Crawford questioning Mr. Mike Dasher’s response to an incident involving that flag across the road from Horton Middle School. I hope Mr. Crawford will forgive me for copying and pasting it here in its entirety for the benefit of those who missed it, and so there will be no misunderstanding.
Beginning of Mr. Crawford’s post:

Dear Commissioner:
I seem to remember you at the start of a meeting in the Ag Center regarding the statue, imploring the overflow crowd to keep things civil.
Yesterday, somebody knocked over a Confederate flag set up on Sanford Road. Your response was thus:
“I’m sure it was an accident. We’ve all slipped an fallen with a sawzall in our hands”.
Is that your way of maintaining the civility?

End of post
Now, I did not see Mr. Dasher’s statement, but I trust that Mr. Crawford provided an accurate representation. l grant you that the statement seems flippant at best, and perhaps unbecoming of a public servant. However, I beg to respectfully pose a few questions for Mr. Crawford:
Sir: Are you equally offended by the display of the flag in the first place, particularly in that location where schoolkids have to pass it every day? Do you think there was any reason behind the choice of that location other than to scare little children? Do you admire supposedly grown men who would do such a thing? You asked about civility. Would that be your way of maintaining civility sir?
