Subject: Champion of local economy visits Pittsboro on Monday
I just finished an excellent book, Grocery Story: The Promise of Food Co-ops in the Age of Grocery Giants that directly relates to grocery shopping in our community. I learned that in the US, only 5 companies receive 67% of all grocery sales and multinational food manufacturers control the products we see on those supermarket shelves. That means their profits leave our local economy. But we have several locally owned coop grocery stores in the Triangle, and one is right in Pittsboro, where profits circle right back into our local economy.
Grocery Store author and food journalist, Jon Steinman, is coming to Pittsboro on Monday to read, discuss and sign books at our local food coop, Chatham Marketplace. He will be talking about how all this affects our local farmers and local food producers. Jon is on a seven month tour of 140 food coops throughout the US and Canada, crossing the continent to share his research and engage with communities.
Here’s his schedule on Monday.
11-1pm Meet the Author and Book Signing – free, in the store
4-6pm Book Reading and Signing – free, in the store
6:30pm – 8pm “Who Owns Your Grocery Store?” Author Talk and Conversation with Evan Diamond, Chatham Marketplace General Manager, in Forest Hall (across the hall from Chatham Marketplace.) Local food and cash bar.
