Subject: Yet Another Flood
Friday night (April 12), the weather ap on my phone jolted me awake .
For the 4th time this year, the National Weather Service was warning that the Haw River near Bynum was flooding. The River had reached the 11 foot mark and would continue to rise.
It informed that at the 11 foot mark (flood stage) that the river will be 400 feet across.
As the flood increases, so does the width of the River.
The speed also increases. One can witness giant trees being tossed down the River like toothpicks.
The roaring sound is fierce. The River roar can be heard inside Bynum homes, even when the windows are closed.
Thankfully, Northern Chatham County still has a rich old-growth tree system whose roots and canopy protect the earth.
Let’s encourage the Pittsboro Mayor, the Board, and Chatham Park to protect this rich buffer.
If clear-cutting the trees and undergrowth renders the earth barren, the earth cannot easily be replenished. Certainly not by saplings and architectural drawings of potted plants.
Encourage CP and Pittsboro to actively protect their investment.
